Dermalogica’s story began in 1986, when Jane Wurwand, a UK-trained skin therapist moved to the America and noted that skin and body therapy education was practically non-existent in that country. While her training had been comprehensive, she found that US students entered the industry licensed but under-trained, and under-respected.Jane opened a small classroom in Marina del Rey under the name The International Dermal Institute (IDI)where she invited licensed skin therapists to get hands-on with extended postgraduate training.

That’s why Dermalogica is more than just a range of products.  It relies on the underlying expertise of highly trained, professional skin therapists.   Dermalogica would never use words like “pamper” or “luxury” to describe itself or the products in its range because the entire ethos of the company is to regard taking good care of your skin as a health, rather than a beauty, issue.   They argue that skin care is not simply a cosmetic issue concerned with beauty and glamour (although these may be desirable by products), it’s principally a matter of skin health.

Classifying skin care as a health issue means removing or simply not using  common irritants from the ingredient menu.  It’s easier and cheaper to formulate products using common “beauty” ingredients like mineral oil, lanolin, artificial colours and fragrances or other cheap fillers,  and although they are cost efficient  in manufacture, these ingredients are just bad for your skin.  The other  essential elements in Dermalogica’s commitment to  a product line free of common irritants and ingredients that could cause breakouts is to insist on “proving” those products in the field  and using only recommendations from qualified skin therapy professionals trained at The International Dermal Institute.

It’s the specialised expertise of the professional skin therapist that is the most powerful element in the  “skin health before beauty”  mantra of Dermalogica which has incorporated a programme of education and professional review and endorsement over the past 25 years.    No promises of miracle cures, no overblown hype.Just a product range that has never condoned or used animal testing and is sold only where consultation and treatments are performed by professional skin therapists. As a result of this no nonsense health-biased agenda, Dermalogica has become the number one choice of skin care professionals globally and is prescribed more often than any other product available.
