While sensitive skin care is nothing new, the number of people that seem to be suffering is on the increase. For most people the definition is quite clear when their skin becomes hyper-sensitive to products they use, the atmosphere, anything they apply to their skin or even wear; the result of which is normally irritable skin that can even be swollen and red. If the skin does become hyper-sensitized in this way, special products that are able to be applied called sensitive skin care products have to be used.

There are a variety of sensitive skin care products available owing to the fact that not everyone that has hyper-sensitive skin has the same problem. However, it is known that in most instances, the skin will not react well too any type of detergent, including soap, or other products with chemicals.

This skin damage can actually affect everyone to a greater or lesser degree and is often just a matter of personal tolerance. Obviously the tolerance level for those individuals with sensitive skin is much lower which means that skin damage might be more rapid and noticeable.

Manufacturers are now more aware of what compounds can cause problems and corrective measures are taken where ingredients are replaced with compounds that do not cause problems or the amount of irritant is reduced to acceptable levels. It may seem obvious, as most skin care products are formulated to help protect the skin, but only use products that are actually marked for sensitive skin use and if you are unsure, check the ingredients listing to see if there are any specific warnings you should be aware of.

Even within the range of sensitive skin care products available, choose those that have the minimum of preservatives, colorings and other additives. Wherever possible, avoid any type of cleanser or toner as they are almost invariably alcohol based.

Wear protective gloves when doing laundry or other chemical based cleaning and if you are allergic to rubber, you can wear cotton gloves below the rubber ones. Another situation that causes a problem for sensitive skin is the sun so if you intend to go out in strong sunlight, you will need to apply a special sunscreen.

This type of precaution is also relevant even if it isn’t sunny as the atmospheric pollution found almost everywhere now will also aggravate the skin and a suitable barrier cream or hypoallergenic moisturizer should help protect vulnerable skin. Then when you clean your face, ensure that nothing contains any soap or alcohol (as mentioned previously) is used and any exfoliation peels or creams are applied carefully not to damage the skin further.

For women that wear makeup, it is recommended that it not be worn for too long and that once again only hypoallergenic skin care products are used. It may seem at first as though you will not have a normal healthy life but with the products formulated nowadays that is not the case at all but is will require a little more forethought on your part before you use products or go out.
