If I ask you to come up with some ab workouts, I can bet that some of the exercises that come to your mind would be ab crunches, sit-ups, leg lifts.  I am here to tell you that there are more effective alternatives than the above exercises.  These metabolism boosting exercises are in the category of high intensity training and they work your whole body including your stomach.

These workouts although do not seem to be focused on the stomach are some of my best workouts for the stomach.  These are three different exercises which I’ve labelled the ‘tri-set’ and you have the option to alternate between them for variety.  Here are the three best ab workouts that are not specifically ab workouts:

a) Renegade Dumbbell Rows
b) Front Squats With Barbell
c) Mountain Climbers On Floor

I believe that these unique and definitely not your ‘run of the mill’ ab exercises will produce the most amazing results.

For a more interesting workout, you can change the reps and sets.  As an example you can do 3 to 4 sets of 8 reps for each exercise, or do 5 sets of 5 reps of each exercise.  The exception is the mountain climbers exercise which is done with a time interval instead of reps.

Let’s begin:

a) Renegade dumbbell Rows
This exercise starts in a push-up position with each hand on a dumbbell.  To perform this exercise, you would alternately row one dumbbell at a time while making sure the other arm keeps you in balance.  The incredible ab workout comes from you performing this exercise while trying to stabilize your body.  If you do this exercise properly, you won’t believe how much stomach muscle is required.

b) Front Squats With Barbell
This is very similar to back squats but instead of having the barbell on your upper back, you will place the barbell on the front of your shoulders.  To make sure that you have the barbell in control, have your arms crossed in front of you cradling the barbell.  To accomplish this, you will require to have your elbows right in front of you.  This workout takes a bit of balance in the beginning so it may be a good idea to have a professional trainer to check your form.  Core strength and stability is required to do this exercise and hence it is a wonderful stomach workout.  As an onlooker to the exercise, it seems like this is mostly a leg workout but you will be convinced that when you are done with you reps, you will feel it in your abs.

c) Mountain Climbers On Floor
The setup to this workout is to begin in a push-up position.  To execute this exercise, you would simply move your feet back and forth while your body remains on the spot.  If you picture a person climbing a mountain, that would be the action.  To add challenge to this workout, move your hands back and for opposite to your legs.  This will become a full body exercise and it will create such an intense workout and in the end, your abs will feel it.

Rest for only 30 seconds when you are done with one exercise then move to the next set of exercise.  This exercise becomes very effective when after you finish with the ‘tri-set’, you rest less than two minutes and repeat to keep those muscles working.
